Description:

Painting Class for all Media is a cross-disciplinary and cross-cultural, theme-based – rather than discipline-based – class. It investigates what discourses we can develop by using the medium of painting through both defining and crossing disciplinary borders.

Our seminars, lectures and discussions will move into a workshop including individual (or mutual) work, and into an exhibition if so desired among the participants.

This is a class which moves you out of your regular studio practice. With quick experiments, discussions and research, we will investigate what painting could be for society today. Mapping out what is going on, and how you see it, is an important part of our process.

As one of our mutual seminar means, we will use Bertold Brecht “Learning Plays” drama methods for figuring out how to deal with - and deconstruct - found footage and text in a playful way. Other ideas on developing our mutual working process are welcome. Apart from this, our class will try out traditional methods from the French school of painting and the New York school of painting, build new tools, experiment with warm & cold colors, try out the dialectics of flatness and illusion, form weaving, experiment with collage and more.

Also we will investigate how post-colonial studies, feminism, identity politics and ideas about the Antropocene have affected our perception of, and the possibilities within this discipline.

A form of research projects this is, and an anthropological approach, if you wish. All in order to find our place in space and time. And to figure out what concepts and gestures we could use that might be relevant to our world.
