NEW TIME !!!! Broken English: Moving Image Art from California presented by Jeanne C. Finley

Jeanne C. Finley will present a film screening of experimental works by the collaborative team, Finley+Muse as well as several other West Coast artists including Tommy Becker, Mark Boswell and Pamela Z. All of the artists use complex narrative structure and story telling to comment upon and often challenge prevailing social structures. Their frequent use of subtitles over original and found footage leads toward simultaneous different storylines. Finley+Muse’s projects weave a discursive, cinematic fabric of narrative, humor, science, and archival and original footage to explore the transformative events and the impact of social and political structures on individuals. Their process utilizes documentary tropes such as interviews and expert information often with multiple narratives colliding and interweaving amid a lush visual and sonic landscape. Boswell’s work is noted for its elliptical montage structure featuring a wild concoction of appropriated film materials coupled with his own production footage. Several of the artists such as Pamela Z, Tommy Becker and Finley+Muse incorporate elements of live performance as part of the cinematic presentation.
