This meeting is regarding the discriminatory ‘citizenship’ act, which recently became law in India and has lead to widespread turmoil across the country. The act, which has already been implemented in one state, rendered 1.9 million people stateless (1), and has led to the creation of ‘detention centres’ where the stateless people have been incarcerated in (2). The act has been labelled as discriminatory by the United Nations Human Rights Office (OHCHR) (3), as well as Amnesty International (4).
This act was announced to be implemented across the nation, which led to widespread protests across the country. The government however, responded by suppressing dissent among the citizens by carrying out internet shutdowns (5). Furthermore, it resulted in police brutality against protesting citizens, educational institutions, Muslim minority institutions and Muslim communities (6,7).
We are a part of a small group of people in Trondheim who are planning to oppose the act and the police brutalities, and as such, we have planned an event with a public info meeting where we will share the details describing why this law is discriminatory and after which we intend to have a demonstration. The meeting will be conducted at Rådhussalen, Trondheim Hovedbibliotek (Main Library), and will be followed by a short demonstration near the venue.
We hope that you can join us for the event and extend your support to our cause.
