This intensive seminar centers on current and past forms of exhibition making and curatorial practices. Through documentation, readings, eyewitness accounts and guest contributions we will explore the decisive role of curatorial/artistic practices in producing and testing new modes of narrating and intra-acting, of address and plural relation building. Since we won’t be able to meet in person, a key characteristic of exhibiting will be suspended: the physical experience. But if, on the other hand, exhibitions have the ability to transgress set frames and existing conditions, i.e. to intervene in the physical absence of bodies and objects, it seems the moment to start imagining anew. In order to do so we might want to ask ourselves a set of questions:
* How do we remember exhibitions?
* How do exhibitions as a medium migrate into other mediums such as the white cube, apartment, gallery or hotel room, as well as magazines, newspapers, buses or sub-ways, into shop windows, online platforms, billboards or neighborhood bars.
* How does subjectivity play into curatorial practices? And what are other methodological considerations?
* Which genres or typologies seem applicable to our endeavor? And how can we encompass wider questions of access and accessibility?
* What would it mean to think of exhibitions as pockets?
Learning outcome: Students will be introduced to exhibition history, curatorial practices, methodologies, reflection on intra-action, accessibility and the body.
