Lives and works in Oslo, Norway

Apichaya (Piya) Wanthiang
(b. 1987, Bangkok, Thailand)

Graduated in 2009 with a BA from Sint-Lukas Brussel and 2012 with a MA in Fine Arts from Bergen Academy of Art and Design. Wanthiang’s practice is a non media-bound investigation into the conditions for sharing experiences and narratives of (be)longing. Thus far, she’s been working with painting, installations, scenography and workshop situations. Often in collaboration she works towards clusters of activity, where one can exist in the complex in-between space of migration and diverse histories and traumas. In doing so she’s attuned to the implicit, the anecdotal, the unspoken and embodied. One of the key questions has become: What material conditions and spatial parameters invoke a, firstly emphatic and secondly critical, situation of sharing and learning? She has previously been showing works in exhibitions such as From X into Minuses at Martin Van Blerk Galery in Antwerp, Belgium (2009), Geography of A at Hordaland Kunstsenter (2012), A Ride Full of Traps at Bergen Kunsthall (2012), without waiting for her reply at USF-visningrommet (2014) – the latter three exhibitions took place in Bergen, Norway. Piya also has an interest in curating and art education. She has worked part time at BEK, Bergen Center for Electronic Art and as guest teacher at the Bergen Academy of Art and Design and Trondheim Academy of Fine Art. Currently she works full time on her art projects.
