From Craft to Concept – A Brief History of Art Education (Survival KiT)

In this presentation and round table discussion, we will talk about the history and purpose of university level art educations. Why are we here? What are some of the current tendencies in art academia? What can you expect from your education?

11:30 – 12:30

12:30 – 16:00
Claiming Space – On Exhibitions

In the art world today, it is the exhibition that is the prime cultural carrier of contemporaneity. But what does it mean to exhibit? Why does art still rely on a physical space to be visited in person? This presentation will give a brief timeline of the history of art exhibitions. We will talk about exhibition design, discuss thoughts on being curated and explore the crucial role of artists in questioning and shaping the phenomenon of the exhibition.

We will end the day with a walk-and-talk to Kristiansten Festning.

Tuesday 27thAug.
10:00 – 16:00
Art in Practice (Brainstorm)

We will continue our discussion on art exhibitions and move towards practical topics of defining and producing a group exhibition. With the arrival in a new place and “finding space” as an overarching theme, the class will have a chance to explore each other’s artistic interests and figure out an exhibition model that is working for the group. The students will be assigned production responsibilities for the exhibition and will have time to start planning their individual (or collaborative) works.

We will end the day with a walk-and-talk to Nyhavna.

Wednesday 28thAug.
10:00 – 16:00
Finding Space (Psychogeography)

We will start the day with a walk-and-talk in the areas surrounding KiT.

The rest of the day will be dedicated to the exhibition production and producing individual art works in the gallery, outside or in the studios/workshops depending on needs. We will meet at 15:00 to discuss progress and start working on how to use the gallery space for the exhibition.
