Art & Technology 2: Temporary Library of Norwegian Media Art

The course aims to develop and produce an exhibition of the Temporary Library of Norwegian Media Art which will be presented at the Metamorf Biennale for Art & Technology in Trondheim, March 2018.
The Temporary Library, initiated by artist, writer, and publisher Alessandro Ludovico, makes a curated selection of publications dealing with topics of digital art and culture to reflect the history and participants of a media art scene of a particular event or site. These collections, acting as both archive and distribution, are then exposed to a broader public. Past versions of the Temporary Library have been produced for the Transmediale Festival (Berlin), ISEA 2017 (Manizales, Colombia), xCoAx 2017 (Lisbon) as well as upcoming versions in the Kochi Biennial (Kochi, India) and WRO Biennale (Wroclaw, Poland).
Students within the course will work on the production of the Temporary Library of Norwegian Media Art which will be on public display at Gallery KiT during the first part of the Metamorf Biennale. Students will together produce an exhibition of audiovisual works, objects, and other printed material accompanying the Temporary Library of Norwegian Media Art. Students in the course will organize a discursive and performance program and all related text and orientation plans for the exhibition.
The course proceeds from the Art & Technology: When Everybody is a Librarian the Library is Everywhere course. During the course all conceptual and spatial organization for the exhibition was developed by participating students, which provides the working plan for the current course.
Students within the course will learn to produce a large-scale exhibition and to create an artistic platform for highlighting the library as a curatorial space for generating connections with collections around a particular specialized knowledge. The space of a library brings together aggregations of printed matter, while also creating a social environment for sharing content together. The course uses the Temporary Library as a Temporary Laboratory, to introduce many lines of critical inquiry regarding the role of printed matter and its historical mapping of ephemeral artistic and cultural practices related to sound, performance, video, networks, etc.
The exhibition will coincide with an art book fair, seminar and performance programme curated by students within the first year of the Master programme at KiT. The Temporary Library will be then donated and form part of a unique collection within the library at KiT, with the possibility to be lent out to other events upon request..

MFA (maximum of 8 masters art students) and BFA students, plus students from other departments within NTNU.
All students are welcome to join the course. However, students who have not participated in the Art & Technology: When Everybody is a Librarian the Library is Everywhere course, will follow the production work plan developed by the students in the previous course.
Note: The schedule reflects production working sessions and also exhibition running times. The course participants will develop the production schedule and individual assignments together and then work according to schedules suitable for each task.
First meeting for the course is on February 8th, in the 3rd floor MFA Hub

Attendance and participation are mandatory. Students will be assessed by their presence, involvement in group work and contribution to the discussions. Students with limited attendance, or little contribution to the production and/or maintenance of the exhibition will not pass the course.
This course is geared towards MFA and BFA students who are committed to following the entire course of the program.
