As in our last semester this is a painting class that takes you out of your regular studio practice. Again I propose a painting class based on research, quick experiments and mutual discussions about what painting could be today, and about how to make it a relevant tool and language for communicating your personal affections, societal concerns, dreams and more.
Last semester we briefly tried out some methods from the French school of painting and New York school of painting within this class. We experimented with new tools, tried out warm & cold colors, the dialectics of flatness and illusion, form weaving, collage and so on. Looking into our tools and how to construct them to me seemed to have been the most productive part of our experiments so far?
However, we also looked partly at some American Post War painters. Dead artists. This semester I would like to dedicate entirely to what we can learn from the living artists I presented last semester. As you all know the artists I presented to you such as Anna Boghiguian, Lubaina Himid, Tala Madani, Ashley Hans Scheirl and Kerry James Marshall do fascinating works by telling forgotten stories.
Forgotten stories. What are the forgotten untold stories around us right here in Trondheim and around us right now? For our spring Semester class on painting I suggest we use our time to investigate local yet unseen stories, and start mediating these on our own or together through individual or collective work, and through group critiques and seminars. A form of research projects this is, and an anthropological approach, if you wish. What would happen if we truly start imagining things and begin telling the stories we can find around us right here within our surroundings?
Stories are powerful: they create nations, institutions, religions, dissidents, fear and rebellion, but also build and break families. Media society makes information move fast, but only very few of us truly develop stories of our own. Together, I hope, we could develop these stories within our class. Trondheim is changing. Our world is changing fast. Also our private life is constantly changing. How do we deal with this? How do we tell the stories surrounding us? Do you want to? Do we want to? How articulate this? As you hear I am interested in urgency. If we do some interesting findings they will directly have an impact on our community. This I can promise you.
At some point the Croatian linguist Boris Buden will join us for giving a lecture on local languages and the relation they have to our global community. He has fascinating ideas about how to articulate a local language.

No preparatory knowledge is needed for joining from KiT students, but we do demand interest, presence, engagement, attention and participation for you to join this class.
Apart from being a painting class, this class is an attempt to find out how to help you make your works move in the way you want them to do around you, and as you want them to.
